First,
let me say that most Internet marketing gurus advise not to
spend too much time worrying about search engine strategies.
The reasons are twofold, First, search engines are notorious
for changing their rules, and second, word-of-mouth and targeted
advertising can far outrank search engines for quality traffic
- for the time you put into them.
But
having said that, there is something to be said for building
your site optimized for search engines, and Michael Wong says
it well.
The
first thing that struck me about Wong's ebook is that he spent
some real time putting it together, and making it a quality
product, physically. It was refreshing after seeing some of
the junk that is thrown together without regard to formatting
or a quality look and feel.
The
current version, the 6th edition, is 296 pages long and it
appears Mr. Wong intends to keep it up to date.
Michael
Wong rightly recommends planning for Search Engines all the
way back at the site planning stage, before you ever purchase
the domain name. He also highly recommends that you purchase
a copy of Webposition Gold, which is one of the items on my
top 5 Must-Have list.
Like
any other subject in Internet marketing, there are occasional
areas of conflict between Michael WOng's advice and other
gurus. I suppose the battle between giving up human readability
vs search engine friendliness will always be raged. Michael
Wong tends to error toward search engine friendliness, with
such statements as "Admittedly some people may find it
a bit more difficult to read but I think it is worth the sacrifice
. . ." This statement is in his discussion about the
use of stop words, which are words like "the", "and,"
and "it."
One
of the features I like about this book are the inclusions
of statements and interviews by search engine engineers, that
give you real insight into how they think.
So
let's get down to it. Do I recommend this book? Yes and no.
Search engine optimization is not my first strategy. I'm of
the belief that as long as you serve up good content search
engine rankings will take care of themselves. For example,
I have not done any SEO for pickaguru.com, yet I rank in the
top 30 for many listings. In fact, without a single effort,
as of this writing I list as number 10 on MSN for Michael
Wong, coming up on the first page.
So
I wouldn't spend my first dollars here. I'd start with all-purpose
marketing courses, that teach about traffic, content, copy
and such.
On
the other hand, for $37 and some quick easy tips on making
your site a little more search engine friendly, this is worth
the price. (top)
