Ralph Wilson:
Guide to Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Guide to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) This link goes to the sellers description and order page. It opens in a new window.

The Guide to Search Engine Optimization is without a doubt one of Wilson's absolute best eBooks. Bear in mind, when I say this, that Wilson has no affiliate program so I have no financial stake in praising it.

There is a huge body of SEO information available. There are a number of good eBooks, loads of pointers on various SEO consultant's websites, and even some good hard books on the subject (Amazon search on SEO).

What I like about Wilsons eBook is that it is jam-packed with good advice in almost every sentence. There is no fluff. No wasted time convincing you of it's own value (don't you hate when marketers do that?).

Some 97 pages in teh 2007 edition coveres about every important topic in SEO, and then gives recommended Websites, software or tools to lead you in the right direction to accomplishing them.

As often as he can, WIlson gives free or low-cost tools rather than just affiliate links to the ones he will make the most money on. Of course thre are affiliate links there as well, as there should be, but he isn't pushy about them.

At the end of the book there are alphabetized indexes of the tools, he mentions, for quick reference.

One of the best features of the eBook is the array of stuff not to do. The stuff that will hurt you in SEO - like FFA sites, link farms, cloaking, and so on.

Wilson mentions nearly every element that affects your search engine ranking near the beginning of the eBook, but then spends the rest of the book taling only about the two big areas you can easily do something about - keyword optimization and incoming links. Factors that are difficult to control, such as the age of your site, number of clicks on your site, and so forth are not widely addressed.

The book is centered around seven specific steps you can control. Each chapter takes on one step. If you spent just one week on each step I'd say you will begin to see very real results in just a few weeks.

The seven steps are:

  1. Conduct Keyword Research
  2. Determine Current Ranking
  3. Make your Webpages Search Engine Freindly
  4. Help Search Engines Index Each Page in your Site
  5. Get Links to your Website
  6. Opitimze Key Webpages
  7. Keep from Getting Banned by Search Engines

I, myself, am planning to make a checklist of tasks based on this book and to go back through my site and work through them. Then I'll make a checklist of things to check before publishing any new page so can keep my site optimized.

This has been and will be, in the future, an invaluable resource for me. Maybe someday I'll research and write my own guide for you. Until then I'm recommending this one.
